Cleaning

Explore helpful tips on how to keep your Porch Potty smelling fresh and clean all the time.

Yes! If your dog uses the Porch Potty as a resting spot or won't use it, follow these easy steps to get them to go potty on it.

  • Don’t allow your dog to lounge or sleep on the Porch Potty. By allowing this behavior, your dog will continue viewing the Porch Potty as a dog bed rather than a dog potty.
  • Only use the Porch Potty when your dog needs to go potty. Lead them to the potty and use positive reinforcement while commanding them to “go.”
  • Walk your dog away from the Porch Potty after they’ve gone potty. Leading them away reinforces the idea that the Porch Potty is their potty spot.
  • Practice makes perfect! If your dog is used to going potty outside, it may take some time for them to understand how to use their new potty.

The best way to use the scenting fire hydrant as a potty trigger is to cover it in your dog’s scent. According to expert dog potty training advice, take a pee pad (or tear off a small piece) and have your dog pee on it. Next, roll the pee pad in the fire hydrant for about 20 minutes to ensure that your dog’s scent is transferred to the hydrant. Then, place the scenting fire hydrant on the Porch Potty.

Overall, it's a personal preference, but we encourage you to try synthetic grass and natural sod to see which one your dog prefers most. You can also decide on the convenience factor.

For instance, our synthetic grass will last anywhere from six months to one year. Our natural sod with live grass will need a replacement in two to four weeks, or it could last up to a few months. The life of the natural grass mostly depends on your local climate and daily care, from ensuring it's watered when needed. But ordering our natural sod on a regular basis is easy as can be! You're in control of how often you receive a new patch of natural sod right to your doorstep.

However, we highly recommend puppy potty training with our natural sod. The natural feel of the backyard gives puppies an outdoor potty experience, even if you live in a high-rise apartment!

The best way to make your Porch Potty more accessible is with the Porch Potty Ramp. This non-slip, sturdy ramp helps small dogs easily walk on and off the Porch Potty! It's also great for dogs with limited mobility or recovering from surgery.

If you have a toy breed, we highly recommend our Grass to Go model, which offers a lower profile structure. With the same durability and all-weather wicker resin surface, Grass to Go is an excellent option for dogs with shorter legs.

When your dog pees on the Porch Potty, their urine goes through the synthetic grass or natural sod and drains to a hole in the center of the grass tray. So, how does the pee travel to one place? The Porch Potty grass tray has unique grooves that guide your dog's pee in the right direction.

Afterward, the urine goes down through our 14-foot ultra-flexible Flex Tube drainage hose. Then, it drains out the other end of the tube into a drainage spot, like a backyard. However, our Indoor Catch Basin is the perfect solution if you don't have a drainage spot. The Porch Potty drains the same way but collects into the Catch Basin, where you can dispose of the urine when needed.

Resources/Blogs

You can clean the Indoor Catch Basin by rinsing it with warm water and wiping it down with a clean cloth. For an extra clean, rinse it with vinegar and water.

To clean the Flex Tubing drainage hose, keep it attached to the Porch Potty and rinse with warm water to flush out any excess urine in the hose.

To clean and care for the synthetic grass, we recommend rinsing it daily after your dog has gone potty. Pick up solid waste and properly dispose of it every time to avoid the potty from smelling. Keep it out of direct sunlight to protect your pup from the sun's harsh rays and to prevent the synthetic grass from getting hot.

To clean and care for the natural sod with live grass, follow the same steps as the synthetic grass with daily rinsing to keep it fresh. Pick up any solid waste and keep the live grass out of direct sunlight to prevent it from becoming too dry. When the live grass begins to turn brown, order a new patch of natural sod.

Yes! For extra freshness, add TURFtastic to your Porch Potty cleaning routine. TURFtastic is truly unique because it’s the first dog potty odor eliminator! So, how does it repel dog potty odor?

TURFtastic organically breaks down odors with natural enzymes, leaving a fresh and clean scent without any added fragrance. Because we always have safety in mind, TURFtastic is non-toxic. So it's safe to use around pets and humans! Plus, it's biodegradable, so it won't damage the environment.

To clean your Porch Potty with TURFtastic, transfer the cleanser to a spray bottle. Then, wash your synthetic grass or natural sod with a garden hose or rinse it with a watering can. Spritz TURFtastic moderately on the damp grass. Allow TURFtastic to dry, and you'll have the freshest-smelling dog potty around!

To clean the recycled plastic barrier of the Porch Potty, wipe it down with a damp cloth soaked in warm water. Remember to wipe down the grass tray for optimal cleanliness.

You can use a cleanser like vinegar or bleach in a minimal amount mixed with water for extra sanitation or odor elimination. When using vinegar or bleach, ensure the water ratio is higher.

Allow the barrier to dry completely before allowing your dog to climb back on the Porch Potty.
